Warmup doodle: started off as a random sketch of a face, but evolved into Wonder Woman after a short while!
Admittedly I never really got into Wonder Woman, since any time I’d encounter her she just seemed like a regular ol’ token-female character garbed in the American flag; as someone who wasn’t already part of the DC readership, she just struck me as some random patriotic citizen who happened to have a magic lasso.
It wasn’t even until a few years ago I actually found out any vague details of her backstory, and it really didn’t seem consistent with what I’d already been exposed to of her (“an Amazonian Princess? Nah, I call bull”), so tried to bring that in a little more here. I also attempted to create a bit of a stronger pose, and gave her a different costume, after… y’know… this whole thing.
As I said I was never a big DC reader, and if I was I’d probably already know enough about the character and her backstory; but as an outsider to the comics, to me it did just seem like a case of “oh hey, we should have a female character who can be wearing a skimpier costume!” — as an outsider to that readership, for me at least, there really wasn’t any incentive there to buy into the DC universe.
Granted that probably wasn’t ever really the case back then, and because of it I have likely missed out on some pretty awesome adventures! But that seems to be becoming truer and truer, especially since the reboot. If DC are looking to make it more appealing for outside readers to take an interest in these characters and their stories, I can say from experience that this probably isn’t the best way to go about doing that. And this… well, that’s enough for me to swear of DC titles entirely.
Long story short, I drew a naff sketch of a non-canon Wonder Woman!
